Jo Matthews profile

Picture: Jo Matthews

Jo Matthews is an experienced leader, executive coach, trainer, sustainable development specialist and facilitator of organisational change, with 24 years in the Further and Higher Education sector, 12yrs as a Deputy Principal and Dean of Higher Education in a College of Further Education. She has designed and delivered leadership development programmes for senior leadership teams in colleges, which have included one to one and team coaching, and delivered strategic leadership training and coaching to a board of trustees of an NGO.

A Fellow of the Institute of Leadership and Management, and an accredited EQ-i practitioner, she now works with senior managers and executives in the public sector and with non governmental organisations. She also manages teams of researchers to deliver commissioned educational research for government departments, the most recent being a review of Governance in Further Education in Northern Ireland. She is currently managing the review of Governance in England across the FE sector.

During her time as Deputy Principal, Jo achieved major strategic advantages for the college and its university partner, through her visionary ability, inspirational leadership and focus on learning at the heart of community and economic development. She continues to co direct the Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning at the University of Plymouth (www.help-cetl.ac.uk), was the visionary behind and delivered the Genesis Project, (www.genesisproject.com) - a centre of expertise delivering education and research for sustainable construction, and secured New Technology Institute status for the College.

In her role as Dean of Higher Education, she had strategic responsibility for developing and implementing a Higher Education strategy for the college, and integrated enterprise and entrepreneurship education into all undergraduate programmes, including securing funding to build incubation units for graduates. She previously managed a School of leadership and management and has worked in the Prison Education Service.

Being a keen environmentalist, Jo introduced a whole college strategy for Education for Sustainable Development, and to support her own development undertook an action research MSc in Responsibility and Business Practice at Bath University. She introduced new working practices to the college such as the World Cafˇ, appreciative inquiry, systems thinking and team coaching. From her experience at the college, she recognised the challenges of this agenda for senior teams in education and other organisations. With her desire to get back closer to learning, Jo honed her coaching skills with the Behavioural Coaching Institute and then became an accredited assessor for the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory. She now coaches senior teams and executives across the public services and NGO's.

Using emotional intelligence and responsible leadership, Jo is passionate about helping individuals and communities find new solutions and ways of working for today's challenges.

Her heart is still firmly in Education and in the power of the professional teaching community to change how we educate people for a sustainable future.
