Case Study 5: Licensing EQ workshop to in-house team
Background Context:
A dynamic fast-growing business in the restaurant sector.
The Need:
To implement emotional intelligence awareness to a group of 500 General Managers and Deputy General Managers. To do this through developing an in-house team of 15 coaches/facilitators.
The EQ Intervention including features of delivery:
- An initial one day workshop for the executive team to get their commitment to the wider programme.
- A group of 15 internal people were selected to become trained EQ-i assessors, to deliver a one-day workshop to use the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory, and to structure a series of activities focused on learning about emotional intelligence.
- Five managers participated in each of three public workshops lead by Ei World where they became qualified in the EQ-i.
- Fifteen managers became licensed to implement EI World's 'EQ and YOU' workshop, a one-day workshop which includes an introduction to emotional intelligence in a business context followed by sharing group EQ results and individual EQ results in a structured, constructive, confidential way.
- Ei World provided additional coaching support for dealing with EQ profiles which were particularly low or unusual in order to support individuals who needed more personal help beyond the scope of planned workshops.
- A group emotional intelligence profile was computed before each workshop group.
The Results:
- A total of 500 managers within this organisation participated in a one-day workshop within a period of 2 months. These workshops were held at multiple locations and each was facilitated by two in-house managers.
- A model of performance was developed showing the links between restaurant performance, server performance, General Manager EQ and customer satisfaction measures. This was used to influence future training and learning needs within the company.
Testimonials
Retail Sales Manager:
"Employees and the organisation both benefit. Employees can use emotional
intelligence to develop themselves. The company can use it to
enhance performance through recruitment and development. It is linked to
Beefeater's Enabling Leadership programme by providing individuals with
the ability to make decisions for themselves rather than having them
imposed as seen in the 1970s and 1980s. There needs to be a training programme
up front to stimulate genuine interest. It is essential to get executive
and senior management buy-in. Understand the benefits for your
employees and your business and sell them. It might not be easy to generate
but these benefits have to be tangible. Do not impose emotional intelligence,
it needs to be cascaded."
Learning and Development Manager:
"Emotional intelligence is important because it allows us to assess the
potential of our staff and develop and utilise their inherent strengths."
Service Quality and Process Manager:
"Within the service industry, 60% to 80% of interaction with guests is
often based on emotion. Emotional intelligence drives behaviour so we
need to recruit good attitude and then train technical ability. Emotional
intelligence provides the tool to recruit 'good attitude'."
