The program begins with a Transforming Stress into Resilience leadership program to provide tools, technology and skill development to create personal and professional benefits for company leaders. This programme also serves as the pre-requisite for internal trainer candidates, who then attend a three-day licensing programme on how to teach the HeartMath techniques to client employees.

The objective of this programme is to improve the health and well-being of both high-risk employees as well as general staff, in order to improve performance and productivity while reducing health costs for the organisation. The individual program includes the Stress and Wellbeing Survey, coaching-style confidential tele-training and the emWave technology to support skill development and sustainable results.

Transforming Stress into Resilience Workshop:
This practical skill-building workshop presents HeartMath research on the physiology of stress and performance while introducing scientifically-validated tools and technology to build resilience, reduce stress, increase performance and manage change. Key HeartMath research concepts are presented to demonstrate the importance of physiological coherence on performance, health and emotional well-being. Core to the programme’s effectiveness is the utilization of the emWave technologies to provide real-time participant feedback on their progress and success in using the tools and techniques learnt.

Participants leave the program immediately able to apply the tools to validate their effectiveness and gain personal and professional benefit. By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Prevent stress before it happens
  • Reset their physiology back to a balanced state (as measured by heart-rate variability) after a stressful situation.
  • Create a new physiological and emotional baseline for increased health, well-being and effectiveness.

Champions:
At the conclusion of the workshop, participants are asked to support the programme’s sustainability by becoming champions. Those who volunteer are given extra guidance and a process for this sustainability with work issues and job challenges.

Metrics:
Key to the success of the HeartMath programme is validating its effectiveness through appropriate business outcomes and measures. HeartMath have worked with clients to establish measures around:

  • Leadership effectiveness
  • Sales performance
  • Sickness/absence
  • Staff retention
  • Stress reduction including fatigue, exhaustion, sleeplessness, headaches, other health symptoms
  • Health improvements such as metabolic syndrome risk
  • Health cost reduction

In addition, a normed and validated psychometric instrument (POQa) is used with each client group to demonstrate pre-post improvements for both the individual and the group. (See Measurement Tool below.)

Transforming Teams Workshop - Advanced Techniques for Teams and Leaders:
A HeartMath Master Trainer will provide selected leaders and teams with advanced tools to increase their team coherence, health and performance. Creating coherent leadership and teamworking are essential steps toward building a healthy sustainable culture. A unique dimension of our approach is identifying and eliminating what we call the “emotional virus”, those negative attitudes and behaviors that can become contagious and deplete morale, effectiveness while undermining high performance. Building team coherence, on the other hand, promotes collaboration, creativity and flexibility during times of change and growth. (Guidebook provided.)

Internal Trainer Prerequisites:
All internal trainer candidates are to complete the following prerequisites prior to participating in the 3-day licensing program.

  • Attend Transforming Stress into Resilience workshop
  • Complete Part One of the 1-on-1 Sustainability Coaching (see below)

Internal Trainer Licensing Program - in Ampthill, Bedfordshire:
After completing the prerequisites, the internal trainer is qualified to attend the 3-day licensing program at the Ei World Heart Intelligence Head Quarters to receive in-depth training on how to teach the HeartMath tools in a classroom setting.

Sustainability Coaching for Internal Trainers

Pre-training education and coaching involves four 1-hour weekly sessions with a HeartMath Master Coach who provides the Internal Trainers with individual tele-coaching to apply HeartMath tools to work-life situations. Through discussion, internal trainers become more aware of the beneficial results achieved from using the tools and how rapidly perception can shift when physiology is changed. This strong foundation of personal experience enables them to be a more effective trainer.

Post-training education and coaching involves four 30-minute monthly sessions. These high impact sessions provide the Internal Trainer with the additional opportunity to share challenges and successes as they gain experience with the tools and to receive coaching regarding trainer issues and job challenges.

On-site Internal Trainer Observation Session:
A HeartMath Master Trainer observes the internal trainers as they deliver a HeartMath workshop to staff members. Two trainers are observed per day, and are provided with constructive feedback and ideas to improve their delivery.

Training Technology – emWave Software and Hardware for Biometric Feedback:
The emWave¨ Personal Stress Reliever and the emWave¨ Desktop Stress Relief System enable participants to observe and control real-time changes in their heart-rate variability. They facilitate practice of the HeartMath tools to reduce stress.

Quality Assurance:
The goals of the Quality Assurance module are to support the leadership in reaching their desired outcomes, and to enhance the use of HeartMath tools in the organisation’s culture. This module includes benchmarking against other organisations' best practices. Also, daily Heart Quote reminders and weekly Inner Quality Management Tips are emailed to HeartMath-trained staff.

Measurement Tool:
In addition to potential metrics described above. program effectiveness will also be assessed through analysis of pre- and post-training measurements. The Personal and Organisational Quality Assessment (POQA) is a validated and normed assessment tool designed by the Institute of HeartMath to provide a broad overview of personal and job-related constructs. This 80-question survey measures physical stress symptoms, psychological health, resilience, emotional competencies, organisational climate and work performance. Examples of these constructs are:

  • personal: fatigue, anger management, distress and vitality
  • physical stress symptoms: inadequate sleep, body aches, rapid heartbeats
  • job-related: satisfaction, productivity, clarity, communication and social support
